Future of Work Trends for 2023 by Gartner
1. Quiet Hiring
— A quiet hiring approach to desired talents. Last year, there was a trend of Quiet Quitting from employees who act less volunteering and cover only things they need to be responsible to, showing no difference compared to ones who are about to resign. This year, it is employers’ turn. By rotating, priority-based organizing and knowledge implementing their own human resources, employers can get more chances to reduce employee churn rate and cost to hire new ones.
2. Hybrid Flexibility Reaches the Front Lines
— It was true in the past that hybrid flexibility is for employees who work in office, but it no longer is in 2023. Lately, many front lines such as medical and factory workers also request flexibility in bespoke or certain schedules and day off with pay.
3. Squeezed by Competing Leaders and Employees’ Expectations, Managers Need Support
— Managers will appear to seek support and assistance due to the pressure from competing leaders and expectations from team members. A research article shows that when in hybrid working, 60% of employees think their managers are a reflection of an organization’s culture. As a consequence, these managers should be supported by being offered training on general management and work prioritization.
4. Pursuit of Non-Traditional Candidates Expands Talent Pipelines
— It was said that 56% of job applicants applied for positions that are not directly related to their academic profiles, and this number is expected to increase. This implies that HR and employers cannot use the traditional selection approach to respond with the current job market situation. HR and employers need to equip a new way by selecting the candidates by capabilities and potential they possess.
5. Healing Pandemic Trauma Opens a Path to Sustainable Performance
— The majority of employees are still in a trauma state affected by COVID-19, economic turmoil and political instability. This possibly causes the working inefficiency, conflicts in the workplace, and churn rate without notice. 82% of employees said they want their employers to treat them as humans rather than just workers. Reasonable time for rest, mental advice and career guide were mentioned.
6. Gen Z Skills Gap Reveals Workforce-Wide Erosion of Social Skills
— The social isolation affected by the pandemic has caused difficulties to Gen Z. 46% of Gen Z said the pandemic made their education more challenging to be achieved and 51% of them said their education has not prepared them to enter the workforce. They failed to develop critical skills such as negotiation, networking, and public speaking, which have a negative impact on employers when they are seeking talents in the job market.
